Belkin Universal Microphone Adapter for iPod

Belkin wised up and realized that no one wants to use the Belkin iPod Voice Recorder to record lectures or meetings. They want to record concerts in high fidelity. Today, they mended their misguided ways and announced the Universal Mic Adapter that will let you connect your tiny stereo mic to your iPod.
You can use the iPod player's abundant storage capacity to store hundreds of hours of audio, and easily review your audio notes using the built-in 3.5mm jack with headphones or your computer. - Attaches securely to your iPod with remote/headphone connector - Records 16-bit audio at 8kHz - Includes real-time recording-level LED indicator - Adjusts microphone sensitivity easily with 3-level gain switch

This smells like a lawsuit waiting to happen - when someone goes into a club and bootlegs a show (in MP3 format). What does the recording industry say about this?

The question is what does the band say about it? Do a Google on "Phish encourage bootleg" to see postings and position papers about the topic.

I agree. I think the Grateful Dead did or does the same thing. (see Larry Lessig's Creative Commons agreement) - but, as you know, not all musicians actually own their own work. So, the question becomes 'who owns the rights to the demonstration of said music'?

What would be the grounds of the lawsuit? That an iPod is smaller than a portable cassette recorder? That mp3 is inherently more easily distributed auido format than microcassettes? If the action is actionable that's one thing. Inventing a nifty gadget is not criminal, no matter how it's used. Any judge that says otherwise is being bribed and/or manipulated by a lobbying group.

since the recordings are 8khz, no one would want to listen to your recordings (including you).
eventually if apple pulls its head out of its a** and upgrades the AD ro 44.1 (or upgrades the firmware to use 44.1 on the AD) then there will be something interesting to talk about.
all very disappointing.

Thanks for your response Alex. So, this being said...is 8khz even poor for the human voice (sans music or other background noise - i.e. a lecture)?
oh...and to clarify, the reason i said "lawsuit" was due to the bootleg ability of the iPod. It had nothing originally to do with format, just a different method to pirate music.
