AT&T Wireless Payback
I heard the news on the radio that AT&T Wireless was sold to Cingular for $15 a share or US$41 billion. While searching out news about the sale, I first looked at the Seattle PI, our local paper, for some information from across Lake Washington. They didn't have news of the sale yet, but this article caught my eye:
AT&T Wireless yesterday confirmed earlier reports it will lay off 220 information technology workers nationally, 150 of them from its Bothell offices.
I found some news about the sale on CBS News, which had this interesting bit of news at the end of the article:
But the company has struggled in recent months. Late last year, it couldn't add new subscribers because of a glitch in a new software system.

The layoffs is the part that sucks. I've got gripes with AT&T, but it's with the company - not the people. The folks in Customer Service with whom I've dealt have been polite and pleasant and I know they really did WANT to help. The blasted company just wouldn't let them. So I'm taking our long standing business elsewhere. And a lot of other folks have gotten disgusted with AT&T and with number portability, they just keep losing customers. I would not be surprised to see Cingular take advantage of the network but dump the AT&T name. The name is well-known, but it may be more infamous than desirable. With any merger, the employees at the buying company usually fare a lot better than those at the bought company, and I suspect that there will be many AT&T Wireless employees getting laid off :(
